The sea devours the unwary. Summoning is an imprecise magic, but it is powerful enough to keep you safe. Go forth, and seek glory. Seek a new home!

Overview

Knight Owls is a new roguelike strategy game for the Game Boy Advance. Gather owls and upgrades while managing your health and money. Voyage through three enemy-filled zones, and defeat the final boss to win. But beware: Summoning magic is risky, and if you lose all your HP, you will have to start the game over from the beginning...

Feel free to leave harsh feedback; I'm interested in hearing people's honest opinions. Thanks for stopping by!

Current game version: Alpha 1.3

Install Instructions

The game is fully playable in-browser with a keyboard (no mouse required). But you can also download it and play it on a desktop emulator, or run it on an actual Game Boy Advance using a flash cartridge. The downloadable version is identical to the in-browser version, except it prompts the player to press A and B instead of X and Z.

There is currently no in-game way to mute the sound, so click the speaker icon in your browser tab if you wish turn off the game's sound.

How is this made??

I used the butano game engine

My source code is here (though be warned, it's VERY messy)

Overall, it was a lot of fun for me to make this GBA game, but I don't think I'll ever do another GBA project, simply because the GBA sound card is terrible. I really don't want to go to the effort to figure out how to use it to make good-sounding music.

Finally beat it!  Fun game, but it ended kinda early-- Herman the Merman makes a strange final boss XD

I'm glad you enjoyed the game! I drew the sprite for Herman early in the game's development, and then just never bothered making a different final boss, haha.

Please add a way to play this with no emulator, I don't know how to get mgba and I don't really want to get it either.

hi there! mgba is free & easy to download: https://mgba.io/downloads.html

as far as making the game playable without an emulator, that is certainly something I will look into. but it's tough; i'm just one person, and there are other things i'd like to work on with this game... only so many hours...

I understand, thanks!
